Obituary For Raymond Robert Bunk III

Raymond Robert Bunk III was born on May 30, 1972, in Rockford, Illinois, to Walter and Mary (Nordstrom) Bunk. He passed away on December 17, 2023, in Bonney Lake, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Angee (Iyall) Bunk; daughter, Adriana Guzman; brothers Chris (Diane) and Matt (Candy) Bunk; and nieces and nephews Dan, Matthew, Paul Thomas, Krystal, Chris, and Tony. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Danielle Erskine and Felicia Alfredson.

Raymond graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Rockford, IL. He continued his education at Western Illinois University and earned an MBA at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Raymond joined the United States Air Force in 1996 and was stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Washington State. He served four years of active duty and then rejoined as a reservist for an additional 19 years. Raymond retired as Senior Master Sergeant in May 2020. For most of his tenure, Raymond served in the fire service earning several awards such as 62d Wing Airman of the Year, AMC Military Firefighter of the Year, and AFSA First Term Airman of the Year. He had two deployments to Egypt and Iraq. He finished his military career as a Postal NCO.

In 2002, Raymond became a police officer with the City of Federal Way. He retired in 2023 after 21 years of service. He served as an Officer, Field Training Officer, Public Information Officer, Lieutenant, and Commander. He played a huge role on the Peer Support Team and Civil Disturbance Unit. In his “spare” time, Raymond served as a Fire Commissioner, Civil Service Commissioner, and business partner in a small distillery for several years.

Since his retirement in June, Raymond volunteered to walk dogs at the Humane Society, started guitar lessons, went fishing, and earned a certification in auctioneering. Raymond was best known for his sense of humor and endless “dad” jokes. Countless tributes have come in recounting his satire but also his ability to positively impact everyone he encountered.

Raymond had a love for travel and sports. He and his wife, Angee, traveled to 32 countries together, and last year, they fulfilled a bucket list item by traveling to Antarctica. Together, they were season ticket holders for the Seattle Kraken, Seahawks, Sounders, Seawolves, and the Lakewood Playhouse. But Raymond’s all-time favorite was Notre Dame football – Go Irish!

Ray was an incredible person that I worked with in the fire service years ago. I honestly can't remember a time that i didn't see him smiling. I can't remember a time when he ever said anything negative, that was just his personality. I was surprised when he went from being a firefighter to a police officer, but when I would see him pull someone over as an officer during his time with Federal way because thats where I lived ; I would drive by with my windows rolled down and yell "Get them Bunk" just to have him laugh or smile. During his time of public service he ran to become a Fire Commissioner (forgive if i got the title wrong) I would always halve way joke with he and say. "Whats next for you Ray, Mayor or Governor or how about President". I'd tell him "Hey man if you ever do become President i only have one request; you have to let me sleep in the Lincoln bedroom in the White House". That would elicit the biggest laugh from him but you what, he'd say no problem man. Ray you will be sorely missed my friend. My condolences to his family for their loss. Marcus Bryant

I had the privilege of working with (then) Lt. Bunk for a few years on graveyard shift at FWPD. I absolutely loved working with him and admired how he took care of his squad. I could walk in to his office and bounce ideas or frustrations off of him and he would leave me laughing. The long nights during wind storms he would be out clearing roads, not because he had to because he wanted to. I have way too many memories I could share about my time knowing Ray. I'm so glad I was able to have known him. My condolences to Angee and the entire family.

I only met Ray once, when Angee and Ray came down for a visit, after my father had passed. Ray seemed like a really nice guy, and I got to know him thru all the trips and adventures that him and Angee went on. Rest in peace Ray, you will be dearly missed. Debbie Craig

I will never forget Ray, such a stand up guy. Spent many nights on ride-a-longs with him during my time at McChord. He was always willing to go the extra mile for not only his family and friends, but strangers in the community as well. Ray, you will be sorely missed Brother. My prayers for you, condolences for your family, and your many many friends.
